The split level home, had a massing of notable horizontality. Through a sliding screen door the kitchen opened to her garden. Rows of garden flowers were arranged in labyrinth-like manner. Running along the foundation of the home were three large peppermint beds. As if intentionally punctuating the house’s horizontal nature, the Peppermint plants climbed vertically. Saturday afternoons spent with my grandmother included simple tasks in her garden, one of which was picking peppermint for tea. Upon finishing our tasks, my brothers and I would come back into the house and relax in my grandfather’s favorite chair as we each enjoyed a glass of peppermint tea. In the summer of 2014, I began to develop an Arduino based device to take waste product (PLA plastic, a biodegradable plastic produced from corn starch) and turn it into recycled filament for use with consumer and industrial grade 3D printers. Low cost 3D printing promotes larger, more diverse maker communities, both in terms of socio economic status and field of study. Along with reducing the high cost of 3D printing my research reduced waste associated with the rapid prototyping process.
